Both habits help to remove plaque from\nteeth and stop harmful bacteria from leading to gum disease and other serious\nproblems. But have you ever wondered whether you should brush or floss first when\nyou\u2019re going through your daily routine? A periodontist in Frisco is here to\ndiscuss the results of a study, published in the <em>Journal of Periodontology, <\/em>that set out to examine this issue. You\nmight just decide to switch up your daily oral hygiene routine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Study\u2019s Parameters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers sought to find out whether brushing followed\nby flossing or flossing followed by brushing has a greater impact on fluoride\nretention and the amount of plaque on teeth. The randomized study examined how\nthe brush-floss sequence affected the teeth of 25 dental students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the first phase of the study, the subjects brushed\nfirst and then flossed. During the second phase, they flossed first and then\nbrushed. Periodically, the researchers measured the amount of interdental\nplaque on the teeth as well as fluoride concentrations in plaque residue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers discovered that when the students flossed\nfirst, they had significantly less interdental plaque (plaque in the spaces\nbetween the teeth) than when they brushed first. They also had higher\nconcentrations of fluoride in the plaque that remained. The higher fluoride\nconcentrations were likely due to the fact that flossing first removed food\nparticles from between the teeth and gave the fluoride in the toothpaste a\ngreater opportunity to bond with the plaque residue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings are significant because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Plaque contains acids that weaken tooth enamel\nand lead to cavities. Removing as much of it as possible is a key to\nmaintaining a healthy mouth.<\/li><li>Fluoride has been proven to aid in cavity\nprevention, and it is most effective when teeth have prolonged exposure to it.\nHigher concentrations of fluoride in dental plaque residue may lead to stronger\nteeth and a lower risk of dental decay.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should You Adjust Your Routine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study was the first of its kind, and its subjects were\nall dental students who have a high level of skill in brushing and flossing\ntechniques. Therefore, it is impossible to say how a study conducted among the\ngeneralized population would turn out. Still, it certainly won\u2019t <em>hurt <\/em>your oral health if you decide to\nfloss before you brush during your nightly oral hygiene routine.
