But did you know that sticking to a consistent\nexercise routine is a great way to protect other parts of your body as well?\nSurprisingly enough, this includes your gum tissue. Keep reading to learn how\nstaying active can reduce your risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friscoperio.com\/our-services.html\">gum disease in Frisco!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on data coming out of the Third National Health and\nNutrition Examination Survey, which is a long-term national survey, researchers\nfound that people who followed basic recommendations for physical activity were\nalso less likely to have periodontal disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to survey data focusing on a specific group of\nparticipants, both nonsmokers and even former smokers who exercised moderately\nfive days a week or vigorously three times a week for at least 10 years showed\nnotable positive signs for their gum tissue. Non-smokers had a 55 percent lower\nrisk for periodontal problems, while former smokers\u2019 risk was even lower, at 75\npercent. With that said, data based on current smokers who exercised did not\nshow a significant association for lower periodontal risk. This implies that\neven if you exercise, it might not matter much if you still use tobacco on a\nregular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Causes Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common cause of gum disease is the sticky film of\nbacteria that collects inside your mouth known as plaque. If this plaque goes\nunremoved, it can easily develop into a much tougher substance known as tartar.\nWhile tartar is more difficult to remove, both can easily irritate and inflame\ngum tissue, causing teeth to separate and form pockets that trap even more\nbacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without treatment, gum disease can make it incredibly\ndifficult to eat certain foods, especially hot or cold foods. It can even lead\nto permanent loss of bone and gum tissue. Thankfully, preventing it is much\neasier than you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How You Can Reduce Your Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s clear that exercise can\u2019t hurt your oral health,\nyou\u2019ll still need to practice daily brushing and flossing to prevent the\nmajority of dental disease. Brushing for at least two minutes twice a day with\nfluoridated toothpaste keeps plaque at bay while flossing daily helps you reach\nthe tight spaces in between teeth where plaque can still develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re interested in getting more exercise into your\ndaily routine, the U.S. Department of Health &amp; Human Services recommends\nAmerican adults to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Perform 150 to 300 minutes (2 hours and 30\nminutes to 5 hours) of moderate-intensity exercise a week.<\/li><li>You can also perform 75 to 150 minutes (1 hour\nand 15 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes) of vigorous-intensity a week if you\nprefer.<\/li><li>Spread aerobic activity throughout the week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do your gums feel tender or sensitive to touch?
