Man thinking about gum disease myths in Frisco

If you’ve ever noticed light bleeding while flossing before, you may have shrugged it off and decided not to worry about it, especially if it’s not a regular occurrence. However, there’s a reason why you should give it attention. People often believe light bleeding after flossing is harmless, a myth about gum disease that has allowed it to become one of the most common chronic conditions in the world. To help you stay informed and protect your oral health, a periodontist is happy to bust common gum disease myths in Frisco.

Myth 1: If You Don’t Have Cavities, You Don’t Have Gum Disease

Even if you are cavity-free, that does not necessarily mean there isn’t underlying gum disease present. In fact, gum disease in its earliest stages is completely painless. That means many people develop it without even noticing the symptoms. This is why routine checkups at a dental office are so vital. Giving a dentist time to examine you will confirm the state of your oral health and determine if treatment or changes in your at-home habits need to occur.

Myth 2: Having Bleeding Gums is Normal

If you try to floss in between your teeth and notice your gums begin to bleed, it’s likely because you aren’t flossing enough. As plaque and food debris collect along your gum line, they can harden and irritate your gum tissue, causing inflammation. In more severe cases, you’ll also notice pain and tenderness in your gums alongside bleeding. If your symptoms do not improve after making changes to your at-home routine, you need to call a dentist for professional examination and potentially treatment.

Myth 3: Gum Disease is Not Serious

Pain, bleeding and tenderness in the gums are just the beginning when it comes to gum disease. In the more serious stages, it can permanently damage your gum tissue and even cause tooth loss. This is because severe gum disease can break down the bone and soft tissue responsible for keeping teeth in place. If you catch the early symptoms of gum disease, you should take them seriously.

Myth 4: Having Gum Disease Means I Will Lose Teeth

If you do notice the early signs of gum disease, including gums that are red, swollen, tender, and/or bleed easily, you still have time to reverse them. While severe disease can cause tooth loss, it is not a forgone conclusion. On top of improving your at-home oral hygiene, visit a periodontist to get the targeted care you need. Periodontists hold specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of all severities of gum disease, making them the best professional to visit if these symptoms develop.

Don’t assume your gum disease will get better on its own, especially if you’ve had symptoms for several days. If you’re struggling with symptoms, get in touch with a periodontist!
